Professional Profile

Dr. Karli Moncrief is a Royal College of Canada certified Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist providing clinical care to our patients at VIRCAN. Her clinical focus is viral hepatitis, as well as management of alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, metabolic liver diseases, and complications of cirrhosis.

She completed her undergraduate medical degree (MD) at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta in 2010, followed by her Internal Medicine residency program at the University of Toronto in 2013. Her Gastroenterology residency training program was completed in 2015 at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She was successfully certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

In 2015, she was one of three recipients awarded a Clinical Fellowship in Hepatology by the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease (CASL). She completed her Hepatology training in 2016 at the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, at both the Toronto Western and Toronto General Hospital sites of UHN. She gained a wealth of experience managing viral and non-viral liver disease under the direct mentorship of Dr. Harry Janssen, Dr. Jordan Feld, and Dr. Hemant Shah.

Dr. Moncrief completed her Masters of Science (MSc) in Physiology at the University of Alberta in 2006 under the supervision of Dr. Susan Jacobs, studying the pathophysiology of portal hypertension. She went on to complete clinical research with Dr. Puneeta Tandon. More recently, Dr. Moncrief’s research interests have focused on quality improvement in the management of patients with cirrhosis.
